The Best Burgers in Sunderland?

Hey there!

2 Church Lane is a very small burger restaurant and bar in Sunderland…not surprisingly on Church Lane.

My boyfriend had just come up to visit, and I’d seen a post from a guy at my university about 2 Church Lane, and if you know me and Matt… we love nothing more than food, so with my promise of a treat I pushed him through the door and in. I’m so glad.

The menu of this place is amazing, and there’s even a locally themed burger which I absolutely love… it really sets the place apart from other chain burger joints. And their weekly deals are also such a bargain, that as a student, I really appreciate!

I ordered the 3.75 – The Glenn Filler, which is cajun butterflied chicken, with crispy bacon, red peppers and jalapenos and a tonne of melted cheddar cheese. It’s then topped with a giant onion ring. All of the burgers are served with sea salt fries, which taste like Seabrook’s Ready Salted crisps, and a homemade coleslaw. This burger was amazing. The chicken breast was moist but not greasy, and the peppers weren’t soggy, but still soft enough to enjoy. The fries were crispy, which is not what I was expecting but it was a pleasant surprise.

Matt ordered 5 – Tyrannosaurus Mex, which is a double beef burger that’s topped with homemade chilli and melted Monterey Jack cheese. It also features sliced chorizo and a chilli jam. It is again served with sea salt fries and homemade coleslaw. I didn’t personally try this one but it looked great, and to quote Matt, it was “really good, the chilli was spicy!”

We went on a Wednesday so took full advantage of their deal and also ordered a ‘sharer’. There wasn’t really any competition to the Halloumi Fries, and anyone that knows me knows I’m obsessed with cheese, so it was perfect really. They were amazing. They were served with a Harissa mayonnaise which surprised me as in most places fried cheese is served with a tomato sauce, but again this is a pleasant surprise.

I didn’t drink here so unfortunately I can’t comment on the cocktail menu, but I’m certainly willing to go back! Matt was very happy with their selection of craft ales, which is essentially his passion so I’m sure he’d be willing to work down the menu with me too.

I only have two issues with 2 Church Lane, firstly, they don’t serve any fizzy orange. I really wanted Fanta, or its equivalent, but had to settle for a glass of Diet Coke, which I think is just me, but it was a little disappointing. Secondly, there wasn’t really any napkins. There was the tiny drinks napkins, that in most bars you use as a coaster, but with such big and messy burgers, it seemed odd to me that there wasn’t a larger option.

All in all, I had a fantastic time here, the service was quick and very friendly, and I honestly can’t wait to go back.

Have you been here before? what did you think? I love hearing from you.
